Charulata - Movie Review

Charulata is the story of the unusually intelligent, childless, lonely and beautiful wife of Bhupati who is a man of action, he has provided her with materialistic comfort but himself remains preoccupied with his paper so Charu is left to amuse herself with her embroidery and opera glasses. They are not just her object of playful idle viewing but they separate her from the outside world, it shows her introvert nature of not wanting to participate but still she wants a clear vision through her lens. She remains mere an audience being inside the house like a bird trapped in a cage. The opera glass also emphasizes on the curious and explorative nature of Charu. Charu's idleness and loneliness within apartment draws her towards mindless card games and reading philosophers. There are references to Bankim Chatterjee. Western influence exists in the movie, right from the furniture, to the dressing style of Bhupati. Bhupati even writes in English. The opening shot ...

Based on Premchand's story, the film is a historical drama set in colonial India during East India Company’s annexation of Oudh in 1856. The movie gives a glimpse of the lucknowy islamic culture, mughal style and urdu language. There are two parallel stories running in the movie.  There are political relations and the game of chess which highlights strategies, tactics, patience, sacrifice etc. One featuring avadh as a big fat cherry, British has their eyes on. The King Wajid ali is shown to be dedicated to the pleasures of art and dedicates all his time poetry, music and dance. Despite the treaty of friendship, the king is asked to give away the kingdom and out of fear of blood shedding, the king hands over his thrown without any fight owing to his tiny ill equipped army and lack of will to fight a battle. Sigmund Freud - Interpretation of Dreams

Sigmund Freud  Interpretation of Dreams - every action is motivated by our unconscious at some level and nothing occurs by chance. we hold back our urges and so these impulses are released through dreams.  -dreams are symbolic and our wishes in disguise. Aspects of Mind 1.Id (primal pleasures and desires) 2. Ego ( moral and self aware aspect of mind, component of personality responsible for dealing with reality ) 3. Superego (censor for id , it holds our internalized moral standards) i. ego ideal  ii.conscience  Desires can be disturbing but the disturbing content is translated into acceptable symbolic form to preserve sleep and prevent us from waking up shocked.  Content of dream is nonsensical and gives a look into our  unconscious. We start with one dream symbol and follow what automatically comes to our mind. Images are classified into five processes 1. displacement (desire for a thing symbolised by something else) 2.projection (p...

Satyajit Ray - Jalsaghar and Devi

Satyajit Ray shows the real Indian culture, traditions and ideas. All the movies have been true to time. They reflect the human condition in changing world, emotional impact of the social, economic and political changes in the lives of the characters. This provides a historical record of the transformation of India. The simple portrayal of women cannot be overlooked. He has showed several shades of female characters. There is courage, simplicity, Bengali style, innocence and an unspoken strength. Ray shows the problems women faced in society and gives us idea what should be done about it. More than the dialogues any viewer is compelled to observe the movie. The movies deceptively are simple but there is a deep underlying complexity of human emotions.
