Kapurush - movie review
Kapurush revolves around a love triangle
focusing on relationship between scriptwriter, married woman and her husband.
Beneath the surface a complex range of emotions are felt.
Ray has always given the freedom of choice
to his female characters. Energetic Karuna refuses to reveal her unspoken
secrets and she in the end chooses her husband. Since this film is about
relationships, after years also viewer can relate to the film to a certain
extent. The movie explores how women behave under pressure and in conditions of
failed love.
A collision between past and present is
evident through flashbacks. Camera work brings out the tensions and
undercurrents which wouldn’t strike the gaze of the viewer otherwise. The music
embellishes the film's low key emotions.
A silent but
intense scene, a moment of painful dawning awareness is portrayed in the
pivotal scene of the film which keeps on hovering throughout the movie is the
flashback to Roy’s student room where he fails to act on his love for Karuna.
We can see Karuna’s distressed face in the foreground with Roy extracting himself
to the background emotionally as well as physically.
It’s still a mystery whether Karuna's
husband knew about her affair but he seems to remain ignorant. Karuna's
decision to snub Amitabh at the station underlines a cruelty personified
through symbolic significance of her sleeping pills. The end is abrupt,
arbitrary but that’s often how love stories in real life.
