Blade Runner


Identification between director and Deckard is established by showing the blade runner sitting in a darkened room observing photographs of the replicants who are human replicas. He calls for close ups and tracks the shots using voight-kampff machine to gaze at the human beings whose humanness is under suspicion.

Attention of camera is lethal to human subject. Camera is capable of confirming the humanity. Blade runner shows its director things along the barrel of his gun thus equating camera with death dealing piece. Gun is used to retire all replicants where as it is used to initiate rachel. Gun can be used to acknowledge or deny humanity.

Flourishing of any given person’s humanity requires acknowledgement by others. The way director uses camera’s gaze transform’s subjects into what replicants are thought to be or he can preserve their subjectivity. Any failure of acknowledgement in a film is a director’s responsibility. Failure can’t be predicted apart from analyzing the film and audience’s assumptions.

Deckard sits in a dark room analyzing film sequences. He uses TV monitor to analyse photos, calling for closeups tracking the shots. Deckard uses V-k machine which is a surrogate camera. He looks at the faces of  beings whose humanness is not confirmed.

The camera is incapable of identifying the humanity of one placed before them. The director equates the use of a gun with a VK machine. Deckard's gun is not always used for the purpose of killing. The camera like Deckard's gun is capable of affirming humanity,as much as denying it.

The flourishing of humanity depends on the director. He can either transform his subjects into simulacra beings or preserve their subjectivity .Acknowledgment of a character is the director's responsibility and its failure is failure of his own humanity. The success of each film a director makes is really assessed by the film's viewers.
